What is alpha matting?

Alpha matting estimates how opaque each pixel should be along difficult edges—hair, fur, smoke—when separating a subject from its background.

Simple color keying fails on semi-transparent strands; a matte stores fractional opacity so composites look natural on new backdrops.

ImgifyTools background tools rely on segmentation plus edge refinement so cutouts keep fine detail instead of jagged “cookie cutter” outlines.

Enable refine / matting modes when your subject has flyaway hair, sheer fabric, or glass. Flat product boxes on contrasting tables often succeed with default cutouts.

Always export PNG (or WebP with alpha) until you intentionally flatten onto white for marketplaces that forbid transparency.

Inspect edges on both light and dark preview backgrounds; halos that look fine on white can show on dark storefront themes.
